The Anomalous Image is an ongoing photographic research project that considers the growing pool of images documenting UFO/UAP encounters. Developed through continued research and participation in the subculture of telepathic UFO summoning, the project utilises a variety of photographic procedures and equipment in order to examine the entangled relations between contemporary imaging technologies and collective notions of truth and belief.
The work in this 2019 exhibition is created in ode to Robert Bingham, who, after coming to terms with his ability to summon aerial anomalies, attempted to make contact with them. Believing in the entity's ability to free the world from suffering, Bingham sought to harness their inherent knowledge using a novel communication strategy. In a public park in Los Angeles, he imbued a happy face helium balloon with three wishes (outlined in the artwork titles below) and released it into the sky. Almost immediately, the rising balloon was mirrored by an anomalous entity, which he instantly proceeded to document with his camera. During this encounter, two bright flashes occurred, split-second moments he later found to have captured as individual frames. These two images are believed to depict the knowledge required to achieve his first two wishes. The final wish remains unanswered.
Many attempts were made to contact Bingham in request to view the images produced on this day, however, no response has been given. This exhibition presents images of anomalous entities captured during the artist's own telepathic summonings as a form of solidarity with Bingham and the potential of his findings.
